Wizard's Tower
The crashing of leaves becomes muffled as you cross the boundary from Farmer Haddux' land into the swamp, remembering his warnings about travelling only in the daylight as the last rays of the twin suns sink below the horizon in a wash of purple and blue.
"My girl is in there! I know they took her, but no one will go into that bloody swamp!" his impassioned raving in the inn had caught your ear, and the money was too good to pass up.
The air feels colder here, still thick with the humidity of the day, but unnaturally chilly for end of the harvest season. You see dark fingers of moss hanging from ragged trees on the ridge ahead, long blackened by the putrid waters in which they sink their roots - not dead, just mangled and drawn out, thin in places where is seems that they'd snap under the weight of so much parasitic vegetation.
Crickets create a blanket of white noise so thick that you almost don't hear it... twigs snapping, a panicked splash, an instinctual hiss, and then all too deliberate silence.
