Winter Festival Fight
Snow still drifts through the lanternlight, slow and soft. The air smells of spice and smoke, of roasting meat and spilled mead. Laughter rings between the stalls, bright as the music from Branwin’s fiddle. Everything feels safe.
Then the bowstring snaps. Not the fiddle — an archer’s bow, loosed in the distance. The note cuts short, replaced by a scream.
Lanterns sway as the crowd turns. Someone knocks over a brazier; sparks scatter across the snow. The laughter curdles into shouting. A man near the Mead Garden stiffens mid-step — his skin grays, eyes glazing like ice — and he turns on the nearest person with a snarl.
It happens all at once. A dozen faces twist into blank, frozen masks. The thralls move in jerks and lunges, grabbing, clawing, shrieking wordless sounds that used to be voices. The smell of blood mixes with the sweet mead and the winter air.
The music is gone. Only wind, fire, and the clash of steel. The festival that began in warmth now burns cold and red.
