The Red Boar Tavern
- The Red Boar is located at the North-East corner of the square. The first floor consists of a large common room, slightly L-shaped with the bar and kitchen area located in the alcove. There is a large open stone fireplace built in the center of the longer portion of the L, the flames surrounded by a blackened grate that allows warmth to pour out, but prevents drunken patrons from falling in. This is surrounded by tables ranging from 4-person to larger 8-person tables scattered throughout the room. The front wall is well-served by large leaded glass windows which allow light in, but still allow privacy for patrons. They have neither shutters nor the ability to open. Upon close inspection, you would note that in each window, there are small levers that hold the lower panes in place (imagine the back of a photo frame) allowing the lowest row to be removed to get a breeze when weather is temperate. At the spot where the L bends, there is a staircase leading to the second floor. Beside the stairs is another door which leads out to the privies.
The second floor of the Red Boar Inn has four 'regular rooms' and one 'large room'. The regular rooms have two (bunk size, but not stacked) beds, each with a wooden chest at the foot. A pitcher and basin and folded cloths are provided by the window, which are made like the ones on the first floor, but do not have the removable panes. There is also a a covered chamber pot under each bed. The larger room has a more 'dorm' feel, with four beds, one in each corner, with the same sort of chest at the foot of each bed and chamber pot beneath it. There is no wash basin as there is, instead, a door to a small adjacent room. In this room, the center of which occupied by the chimney of the fireplace on the first floor, radiating warmth into the room. There is a handpump and a large basin for washing up. Beneath it, in the wooden cabinet, a tin washtub is situated and can be swung out on a pivot. If you put the stopper in the wash basin, the water will stay in there, but if you pull that stopper, the water drains into the washtub, then down the drain unless the stopper is removed from the wash basin and the lower drain is plugged. There is no window in the 'bathing room'.
