The Black Forest
The Black Forest looms beyond Mountain Haven like a living wall of shadow, ancient and untouched by time. Towering pines choke the sky overhead, their twisted branches weaving so tightly together that sunlight struggles to reach the forest floor. Even during the day, the woods exist in a perpetual twilight where mist curls between roots and every sound feels muffled beneath layers of damp earth and fallen needles. Narrow animal trails wind unpredictably through steep hills, moss-covered stones, and icy creeks fed by mountain snowmelt. The air carries the scent of pine sap, wet bark, and decay. Travelers speak in hushed voices of strange disappearances, distant whispers, and the unnerving sensation of being watched from somewhere just beyond sight. Birds rarely sing here, and wildlife seems to vanish deeper into the woods at the approach of strangers. The deeper one ventures into the Black Forest, the more the world feels wrong—quiet, cold, and patiently waiting.
