TAHITI MUSH - Hell's Kitchen
Once called Bloemendael, for its floral meadows, Hell's Kitchen quickly earned a reputation as something far more sinister as the shady underbelly to the lights and glamour of Times Square and Broadway. With it's connection to the local slaughterhouses and meatpacking plants; it brought with it new immigrants that were looking for a start and put them in direct confrontation with the poor locals that wanted to fiercely maintain their jobs and lifestyles. Violence quickly erupted here as roaming gangs would openly attack each other in the streets and murder and mayhem was a way of life since the late 1800s.
Attempts were being made to remake the decaying Hell's Kitchen into something else - with the Hudson Yards complex were under construction at the neighborhood's southern tip and there is an attempt to revive the High Line; the elevated park was originally a railroad corridor servicing docks and meatpacking facilities. The Chitauri invasion, however, halted these projects and in fact forced the already gentrified neighborhood to take several steps backwards. Even with the token effort of an already beleaguered city to offer a splash of new paint and re-purposed construction, it's hard to shake a reputation earned by over a century of violence; Hell's Kitchen is still mostly avoided except by the most hardy of travelers and locals alike. Dominating the landscape is the Fisk building, it's stark red neon light cast upon most of the neighborhood.
